Zijn sculpturen – opgebouwd uit gevonden, vaak gebroken en/of verweerde voorwerpen, dan wel handgemaakt aan de hand van traditionele technieken – overstijgen in zijn tentoonstellingen hun veelvormigheid en brengen ons in contact met het hier en nu. De interactie van de objecten met de ruimte, waaraan de toeschouwer deelachtig wordt gemaakt, is daarbij cruciaal. Een strak, dynamisch geheel, rijk aan inhoudelijke verbanden en letsels van eerdere ontmoetingen, neemt je in zich op en weerspiegelt onze eigen kracht en kwetsbaarheid.

Voor zijn tentoonstelling in Cc Strombeek transformeert Van Roy de ruimte tot een contemplatieve omgeving, een plek waar verval en vernieuwing samenkomen. Door zich te richten op de levenscycli van materialen, onderzoekt hij hoe materie zelf kan fungeren als verteller. Een bijzonder indringend deel van de tentoonstelling omvat het gebruik van gebroken chocoladefiguren, die Van Roy tijdens een residentie bij Fonderia Battaglia in Milaan tot nieuwe vormen reconstrueerde en vervolgens fixeerde in brons als zijnde sculpturale Polaroids. Een voorbereidende giettest had uitgewezen dat de chocolade in de keramische mal onvolledig verbrandt en daardoor storingen veroorzaakt en carboniseert in het bronzen afgietsel. Gebruik makend van die materiële weerspannigheid, culmineerde het project in een reeks unieke beelden in een vormentaal die sculpturale ambitie combineert met thermodynamica en populaire cultuur. Deze herschikking, die zijn wetenschappelijk-artistiek onderzoeksproject Les Quatre Guides du Chaos sublimeert, raakt aan de symboliek van Pasen en verenigt universele thema’s van hoop, kosmische vernieuwing en de eindeloze cycli van leven en dood. Het gelijkwaardige esthetische potentieel van groei en degeneratie wordt onderlijnd, waarbij fysieke transformatie in verband wordt gebracht met bredere existentiële en maatschappelijke reflecties.

Maarten Van Roy begon in 2007 aan zijn Bachelor in de beeldhouwkunst aan de KASK – School of Arts in Gent, die hij in 2010 afrondde. In datzelfde jaar verhuisde hij naar Duitsland om er zijn Master in de Vrije Kunsten te voltooien aan de Kunstakademie Münster bij Prof. Henk Visch, door wie hij in 2012 tot Meisterschüler werd benoemd. Hij vestigde zich nadien in Keulen, waar hij zes jaar zou wonen en werken. Hij was aanvankelijk vooral actief in Duitsland en sinds zijn verhuis naar Brussel in 2018 ook in België en Italië. Hij nam deel aan diverse residenties in Europa en ontving verschillende beurzen en prijzen. Zijn tentoonstelling in Cc Strombeek vormt zijn eerste institutionele solotentoonstelling in België.

Composées d’objets trouvés, souvent cassés et/ou usés, ou réalisées à la main selon des techniques traditionnelles, les sculptures de ses expositions transcendent leur polymorphie et nous mettent au contact de l’instant présent. L’interaction entre les objets et l’espace, dont le spectateur fait partie, est cruciale. Un ensemble cohérent et dynamique, riche en connexions sur le fond et en blessures laissées par des rencontres antérieures, nous emporte en reflétant notre force et notre vulnérabilité.

Pour son exposition au Cc Strombeek, Van Roy transforme l’espace en un environnement contemplatif, un lieu où décomposition et renouveau convergent. En se concentrant sur les cycles de vie des matériaux, il explore la manière dont la matière elle-même peut endosser le rôle de narrateur. Une partie particulièrement poignante de l’exposition comprend des figurines en chocolat brisées, que Van Roy a reconstruites sous de nouvelles formes lors d’une résidence à Fonderia Battaglia à Milan et a fixées dans le bronze tels des clichés Polaroid sculpturaux. Un test de coulée avait révélé que le chocolat dans le moule en céramique ne se consume pas entièrement, provoquant des irrégularités et une carbonisation dans la fonte en bronze. En exploitant cette résistance matérielle, le processus a abouti à une série de sculptures uniques, alliant une ambition sculpturale à la thermodynamique et à la culture populaire. Ce réarrangement, qui sublime son projet de recherche scientifico-artistique Les Quatre Guides du Chaos, touche à la symbolique de Pâques et réunit les thèmes universels que sont l’espoir, le renouveau cosmique et les cycles sans fin de la vie et de la mort. L’artiste souligne le potentiel esthétique équivalent de la croissance et de la dégénérescence, et met en lien la transformation physique et des réflexions existentielles et sociales plus larges.

Maarten Van Roy a commencé son bachelier en sculpture à la KASK – School of Arts de Gand en 2007 et l’a terminé en 2010. La même année, il a déménagé en Allemagne pour terminer son master en arts libéraux à la Kunstakademie Münster, sous la houlette du professeur Henk Visch, qui l’a nommé Meisterschüler en 2012. Il s’est ensuite installé à Cologne, où il a vécu et travaillé six ans. Principalement actif en Allemagne à ses débuts, il l’est également en Belgique et en Italie depuis qu’il a emménagé à Bruxelles en 2018. Il a participé à diverses résidences en Europe et a décroché plusieurs bourses et prix. Son exposition au Cc Strombeek est sa première expérience solo institutionnelle en Belgique.

In his exhibitions, his sculptures - constructed from found, often broken and/or weathered objects, or handmade using traditional techniques - transcend their multiformity and put us in touch with the here and now. The interaction of the objects with the space, to which the viewer becomes a part, is crucial in this. A tight, dynamic whole, rich in substantive connections and injuries from previous encounters, takes one in and reflects our individual strength and vulnerability.

For his exhibition at CC Strombeek, Van Roy transforms the space into a contemplative environment, a place where decay and renewal converge. By focusing on the life cycles of materials, he explores how matter itself can act as a storyteller. A particularly poignant part of the exhibition includes the use of broken chocolate figures, which Van Roy reconstructed into new forms during a residency at Fonderia Battaglia in Milan and subsequently fixed in bronze like sculptural Polaroids. A casting test had revealed that the chocolate in the ceramic mold does not fully burn away, causing glitches and carbonization in the bronze cast. Having exploited this phenomenon, the result is a series of unique sculptures, merging sculptural ambition with thermodynamics and popular culture. This rearrangement, which sublimates his scientific-artistic research project Les Quatre Guides du Chaos, touches on the symbolism of Easter and unites universal themes of hope, cosmic renewal and the endless cycles of life and death. The equal aesthetic potential of growth and degeneration is underlined, linking physical transformation to broader existential and social reflections.

Maarten Van Roy began his Bachelor of Sculpture at the KASK - School of Arts in Ghent in 2007, which he completed in 2010. That same year, he moved to Germany to complete his Master in Free Arts at the Kunstakademie Münster with Prof. Henk Visch, by whom he was appointed Meisterschüler in 2012. He then settled in Cologne, where he went on to live and work for six years. He was initially active in Germany but, since moving to Brussels in 2018, has also worked in Belgium and Italy. He has participated in several residencies in Europe and received several grants and prizes. His exhibition at CC Strombeek constitutes his first institutional solo exhibition in Belgium.
